Designed for Open water swimmers or proficient pool swimmers new to the sport and who wish to acquire skills, techniques and confidence specific to open water swimming and triathlon competitions. With an emphasis on improving your front crawl technique for open water swimming.

 

Introduction to Open Water Swimming

  • Information and advice about kit and wetsuit fitting
  • Learn about safe entry and acclimatisation
  • Acquire the technique and skills for open water swimming including sighting, turning and drafting.
  • Receive guidance on your swimming technique
  • This course is perfect for medium and fast lane pool swimmers transitioning to the outdoors, as well as those entering events or looking to build confidence in the open water by perfecting the key skills required.
  • We will be covering both theory and practical elements as well as wetsuit guidance. The coach will cover equipment, risk awareness and technical skills such as breathing, positioning, propulsion, stroke adjustment for open water, sighting, turning and drafting.

This course is ideal for Open water swimmers looking to improve their skills or those preparing for events or wanting to boost their confidence in open water by honing crucial skills. We will explore both theoretical and practical aspects. The coach will address risk awareness, and key technical skills such as breathing, positioning, propulsion, stroke adjustments for open water, sighting, turning, race starts and drafting. Enhance your confidence in open water to fully enjoy this amazing sport and gain a competitive edge in events.

We are an ideal place for people wishing to safely access open water for a ‘wild swimming’ experience. The lake is easy to enter and the water is of high quality and at a consistent temperature. You may even see the resident grey heron. Swimmers wishing to train for general fitness, triathlons and open water competitions and events are served by a measured 750M circuit. The circuit is marked by large bright buoys which assist with sighting when swimming.
Sam Redford
Sam has been a STA coach at Love Open Water for over three years now and loves working with people who are just starting their open water journey and experienced swimmers who would like to improve. He loves helping swimmers to prepare for events and has competed himself in open water events for over 10 years including River dart 10k, bantham Swoosh, Great North swim 5km, Dock2Dock 5k, beat the tide 4km, Olympic Triathlons and sprint triathlons.

Tamsin Gale
Tamsin holds a STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming and has been an accredited STA open water swimming coach for 5 years. She has helped hundreds of swimmers improve their technique and confidence in open water. Since 2020 she has run the coaching at Love Open Water at Canary Wharf and London Royal Docks as well as guiding and coaching for SwimQuest Holidays. Tamsin completed her first open water race 10 years ago and has since gone on to complete swim marathons including the Thames Marathon, Vidösternsimmet 21k+ and a channel relay. Tamsin is passionate about open water swimming and loves to help swimmers start on their outdoor swimming journey and developing the skills they need to get the edge in events.
